What it’s about. Nachdem die junge Sam in Los Angeles den Tod ihrer Mutter verarbeiten muss und dann noch mit dem Gesetz in Konflikt gerät, wird sie von Ihrem Vater in den Süden nach Atlanta geschickt. Dort wohnt sie bei ihrer Tante, ihrem Onkel und ihrer lebenfrohen und gottesfürchtigen Cousine Jess, die sie mit ihrer rauflustigen Gospelgruppe bekannt macht. Der unerlaubte Besuch einer Party der beiden Mädchen führt zu einer Strafe, die Jess letztendlich für neue Perspektiven öffnet und ihr Gott näher bringt - der Beitritt in eben diese Gospelgruppe. Nur widerwillig begleitet Jess die Gruppe schließlich zu einem Gospel-Gesangwettberwerb. Doch dies könnte auch die Chance sein, ihren Traum von einer Gesangs-Karriere zu verwirklichen.
