What it’s about. Schwerverbrecher Don Starling (John Crawford) bricht aus dem Gefängnis aus, wobei er einen Wachmann tötet. Er schart seine frühere Bande um sich und luchst dem Buchmacher Gus Hawkins (Donald Pleasance) in einem spektakulären Raub 4000 englische Pfund ab. Doch kommt bei der Tat ein 19jähriges Mädchen ums Leben und Inspektor Harry Martineau (Stanley Baker) begibt sich auf Starlings Spur. Die beiden kennen sich aus Kindertagen, und der hartgesottene Inspektor ist in den Hinterhöfen und Bars der Unterwelt mehr Zuhause als bei seiner zutiefst frustrierten Frau Julia. So sind Martineau und die Bardame Lucretia "Lucky" Luske (Vanda Godswell) weit eher aus einem Holz und bewegen sich stets am Rande des Flirts. Doch während Martineaus Privatleben zerfällt, liefert ihm der skrupellose Don Starling, seinerseits Liebhaber von Gus Hawkins’ Frau Chloe (Billie Whitelaw), eine rasante Hetzjagd in und um Manchester, die den Inspektor auf unerwartete Fährten lockt…
