What it’s about. Ashley Smith leidet noch immer sehr unter dem Tod ihres Mannes und betäubt ihren Schmerz mit Drogen. Zur selben Zeit flüchtet der kriminelle Brian Nichols aus dem städtischen Gerichtsgebäude, wobei er einen Richter und einen Polizisten tötet. Mit der Polizei dicht auf den Fersen, sucht er Zuflucht in Ashleys Wohnung und nimmt die junge Frau in ihren eigenen vier Wänden als Geisel. Die Situation scheint ausweglos, doch als Ashley anfängt, Brian aus einem Buch vorzulesen, das ihr in ihrer Selbsthilfegruppe empfohlen wurde, entwickeln die beiden allmählich ein tieferes Verständnis füreinander…
