What it’s about. Captain John Boyd wird nach dem Krieg in ein gottverlassenes Fort mitten in der Sierra Nevada versetzt. Hier leben außer ihm nur wenige Menschen, mit denen er sich aber mehr oder weniger anfreundet. Eines Tages finden sie einen Fremden mit dem Namen Colqhuon, der fast erfroren ist. Sie pflegen ihn wieder gesund, müssen dann aber feststellen, daß Colqhuon offensichtlich ein Kanibale ist. Das will ihm aber niemand glauben, und da sowohl alle Zeugen als auch der Fremde tot zu sein scheinen, geschieht auch nichts weiter – bis es eines Tages einen neuen Kommandanten gibt, der genau so aussieht, wie der mutmaßlich tote Menschenfresser.
