Der englische Schauspieler erlangte Anfang der 1960er-Jahre mit Filmen wie „Die Einsamkeit des Langstreckenläufers“ (1962), „Billy Liar“ (1963) und „Doktor Schiwago“ (1965) Bekanntheit. Seit Mitte der 1960er-Jahre ist er vor allem für seine Theaterarbeit bekannt. Im Februar 2001 wurde Courtenay für seine vierzigjährigen Verdienste um Film und Theater zum Ritter geschlagen. Er ist Präsident des offiziellen Fanclubs von Hull City A.F.C. 1999 verlieh ihm die Universität Hull die Ehrendoktorwürde.
