Director de cine irlandés nacido en Dublín. Fue educado en la escuela de San Pablo y en el Kings College de Londres. Antes de convertirse en director, actuó en teatros de vodevil con su esposa, Helen Oberg. Algunas de sus películas más notables fueron adaptaciones cinematográficas, Peter Pan (1924), Beau Geste (1926), El capitán Sorrell (1927) por la que fue nominado para el Premio Oscar de la Academia al Mejor Director; Ríe, payaso, ríe (1928) con Lon Chaney y The Flying Squad (1940), su última película. Murió en Los Angeles, California.
