What it’s about. Dans le Nord des Etats-Unis, à la fin du 19éme siècle, Pat gagne sa vie en travaillant dans diverses exploitations forestières. Une réputation de bagarreur le devance partout où il se rend. Parce qu'il a lutté contre un bandit, il devient symphatiques à tout le monde et décide alors de boxer pour gagner d'avantage d'argent. Il rencontre carrigan dans un combat truqué qu'il accepte de perdre contre une somme importante. Cela provoque la fureur des parieurs mais Pat se rachète en sauvant la vie du jeune Tommy qui manque de se noyer. La jeune journaliste maude lui tombe dans les bras.
