What it’s about. Bart Carter a sacrifié sa carrière d'écrivain pour subvenir aux besoins de sa femme Peggy et de leurs cinq enfants en travaillant comme commis dans une maison d'édition new-yorkaise . Lorsque son ancienne petite amie Mildred Bronson, agente littéraire travaillant au bureau parisien, revient aux États-Unis, elle s'arrange pour que Bart perçoive son salaire régulier tout en travaillant sur un roman. Sa vie familiale étant si chaotique, Bart écrit dans l'appartement de Mildred pendant la journée et y dîne fréquemment. Tous deux découvrent bientôt que leurs anciens sentiments ont refait surface.
